“In all our business activities, we will continuously work towards reducing our impact on the environment and manage our premises in an environmentally sensitive manner without compromising our high standards of quality and comfort.”
In order to work towards this commitment, we will:-
- Meet all the legal requirements relevant to our business activity
Eg: ensure the correct disposal of waste, keep records of energy, water and waste data.
- Actively communicate and promote the advantages of being environmentally aware by providing education and information from the relevant bodies supporting this issue.
Eg: Availability of Green File containing energy/waste/water statistics. Promote other businesses in the GTBS scheme. Ensure the availability of literature/weblinks relevant to the environment and the benefits of fair trade purchasing.
- Reduce our energy consumption by monitoring, control and minimizing and using appropriate and realistic measures, ie increased energy efficiency.
Eg: good working practices, purchasing policy for energy efficiency appliances, light bulbs etc
- Minimise the use of water where practicably possible, monitor and control.
Eg: Adoption of good working practices, guest towel agreements, maintenance of plumbing appliances and purchasing policy for fitments. Re-using water for use on the garden.
- Reflect in our buying policy a preference to purchase services locally where possible and enquire of our supplier’s environmental policies. Use re-cycled paper products where possible and sustainable timber products in any building work. To offer a range of either local produced products where economically viable and fair-trade purchases where appropriate.
Eg: Use re-cycled toilet paper, ink cartridges and Forest Stewardship Council timber products. We also offer local wine, cheese and farm eggs.
- Incorporate into our waste management policy, to minimize the amount of waste purchased and produced by practical measures and re-cycling of items. Regular re-cycling of glass, aluminium, cardboard, plastics, garden waste takes place, also the correct disposal or re-cycling of white goods and furniture.
Eg: Minimal use of washing products, re-cycling or purchasing second hand furniture etc
- Actively encourage visitors to ‘leave the car’ and use public transport whenever practically possible for journeys to and from Devon and to encourage walking whilst in the local vicinity.
Eg: Provide leaflets/information/web links to public transport/cycle hire companies. Offer a collection service from local public transport links. Offer walks/maps for local area.
- Support wildlife and local landscape initiatives. Even though we have limited grounds we encourage and make consideration of wildlife in the garden.
Eg: Offer literature on nature reserves, Devon Wildlife Trust, Dartmoor National Park, coastal walks and the importance of the geological make up of the local area etc.
The above will all be achieved by raising awareness, and incorporating environmental issues into the day to day running of our business.
